Director: Ousmane Sembène
Synopsis: Moolaadé is a rousing polemic directed against the still common African practice of female genital cutting. Set in a small African village, four young girls (aged 9) facing ritual "purification" flee to the household of Collé Ardo Gallo Sy, a strong-willed woman who has managed to shield her own teenage daughter from mutilation. The horrific and torturous genital mutilation can be fatal and often results in forced Caesarean section births by circumcised mothers. Collé invokes the time-honoured custom of Moolaadé (sanctuary) to protect the fugitives, and tension mounts as the ensuing standoff pits Collé against village traditionalists (both male and female) and endangers the prospective marriage of her daughter to the heir-apparent to the tribal throne.
Constructed on the tension between two ancient traditions: female circumcision and the equally powerful traditional right (called moolaadé) to protect the weak from the strong, this film is the conclusion to veteran Senegalese director Ousmane Sembène’s trilogy focussing on the “awakening and daily heroism of African women at the beginning of the new century.” The trilogy began with L'heroisme au quotidian (1999) and Faat Kine (2000).
Sembène, now 83, continues to use cinema as a political platform to remind his people of their predicaments and urge them to take responsibility – “They hold their destiny in their hands. Nobody other than ourselves can solve our problems.” For him, Moolaadé, his 14th film, is not just about female circumcision, “it's about the liberation of our societies, the freedom of our people."
