“…Because helping each starfish makes a difference…”
Most of us know the story about the little boy who found a shore lined with starfishes. When he started throwing them back into the ocean one by one, an old man asked him, “What’s the use? You will never be able to save all of them”.
Cupping the starfish in his hand, the little boy replied, “At least I helped these few to live.“
This message of hope that individuals can make a difference in a person’s life could not have been clearer. SPLAT! is a project dedicated to supporting projects run by UNIFEM and AIDHA. Raising awareness about the hardship women face in South East Asia, namely human trafficking and prostitution, is a priority of the project.
Led by Mr Augustine Chan, UNIFEM and AIDHA, the cheerful bunch of Art Club students from Crescent Girls School received literature about the project as well as information about UNIFEM and AIDHA projects.
The video "Women and Children for Sale", which was of abused domestic workers and the harsh reality of prostitution in Indonesia and Malaysia was especially poignant. When asked of Crescent Girls what they felt when watching the video, some of them felt “disgusted”, “angry”, “pity” and “shocked by the treatment of these women”.
Teacher-in-charge of Crescent Girls School, Ms Tricia Goh, was very inspired by the video and thinks that it will make a larger impact if shown to the general assembly. She hopes to work more closely with UNIFEM, in encouraging her students to participate in SPLAT!.
“No matter how many times I have watched the video about Laras who was sold as a prostitute at 12 years old, I still get very emotional and moved to tears…” Saleemah Ismail, President UNIFEM.
The core focus of SPLAT! will be the Arts Competition and auction of the Winning entries to the public. The theme of the Arts Competition is "In Praise of Women / Femininity ".
The Arts Competition is open to students studying in any Secondary, Post-Secondary or Pre-University institution born between 1985 and 1995. Participation in the Arts Competition is free-of-charge.
