SPOTLIGHT ON: World Poverty Day - October 17th
More people have been lifted out of poverty in the last 50 years than in the previous 500. Yet 1.2 billion people still live on less than USD$1 per day. Seven out of 10 of the world’s hungry are women and girls, according to the UN World Food Program. As they are deeply affected by poverty, women hold great potential to end it. But until their potential is recognised and realised, women will remain the missing piece of the poverty elimination puzzle, and will not fully enjoy the benefits of the economic growth to which they contribute.

EVENT REPORT: Educating our Youth through School Talks
UNIFEM Singapore has begun a series of school talks aimed at generating awareness among Singapore's youth on women's issues facing the region today. The first school talks were given at Cedar Girls Secondary School from September 10th to 13th, 2007. This was followed by an assembly talk for about 1,000 students at Hwa Chong Junior College on September 14th.
Approximately 400 students in total from Cedar Girls Secondary listened as they were first presented with sobering statistics on the rising number of abuse and trafficking cases of women and children all round the world. The statistics were presented in the form of a pop quiz which generated much buzz and participation among the girls. The students were also shown a video clip about trafficking and the abuse of foreign maids. For many, the video clip brought the message home loud and clear. After the talks, several students approached the UNIFEM team to ask about joining as student volunteers. Many were shocked about what they saw and heard during the talks and were intent on spreading the message which was exactly what UNIFEM Singapore was hoping to achieve.
All of us at UNIFEM Singapore are very encouraged by the response and support we received from Cedar Girls Secondary. We are looking forward to spreading the word at more schools in 2008 as well as welcoming more youth team volunteers.
