SPOTLIGHT ON: 'Day Off' Campaign for Domestic Workers
Singapore is fortunate to be one of the richer countries in South East Asia, thereby being able to benefit from the forces of migrant economics. Out of this comes a ready pool of women, from neighbouring countries like Philippines and Indonesia, trying to make a better life for their families back home by venturing to Singapore to become a domestic worker, or what we commonly refer to as maid. One in seven households in Singapore employs a domestic worker amounting to a staggering 150,000 or so migrant domestic workers in Singapore. Shockingly, less than half of these women get an off day and only a lucky minority get one rest day a week. Domestic workers need their off days to rest, socialise with their friends, enjoy themselves and participate in cultural and religious activities. Like the rest of us, they need their rest day to unwind and recharge themselves.
Recognising the need to improve working conditions for these migrant women, most notably by giving them a day off, UNIFEM Singapore is working with local NGOs HOME (www.home.org.sg) and Transient Workers Count Too (www.twc2.org.sg) on a 'day off' campaign for Domestic Workers. One of the main aims of this campaign is to build public support for a change in legislation to give Domestic Workers one rest day a week.
UNIFEM Singapore is soft-launching this campaign with a series of MRT Poster Ads along the NE Line. These ads will be visible from 1st March 2008 onwards. The website www.maiddayoff.com will also be launched in a trial version from 1st March. The campaign and site will be officially launched on 1st May 2008.
